Training in Snow and avalanches for children

Training objectives:

– Introduce the world of snow  and safety in avalanches to the children, in schools, ski clubs or hiking centers.

– Know the snow and create awareness that safety and training in avalanches is paramount in avalanche terrain.

Training contents:

Introductiom:

This project aims to introduce students from environments close to mountain areas to know the snow and to create awareness of the need to acquire “healthy” habits to carry out any activity in snowy environments, safely.

On the other hand, we believe it is important to publicize the natural resources of your area. We also believe that it is very important to promote students’ interest in their territory and the winter environment, and to help them develop positive attitudes towards the problems that snow can cause.

Audience:

-Children in a school context, club or hiking center

Contents and activities:

The proposal is divided into two sessions. The first is designed to take place in the classroom and lasts one hour. The second is necessary to do it in a place with snow and lasts three hours.

The contents of the sessions are as follows:

  1. First session: Brief introduction of the mountain, snow and avalanches through videos and photographs. What sensations does the snowy landscape convey to you? What experiences have you had with snow? Presentation of the material of the rescue in avalanches, where the boys and girls will be able to know and touch the different devices. The session will end with a small demonstration of a rescue within the class.
  2. Second session: There will be three workshops.
Geographical location and basic notions of orientation
Discovery of the snow cover with the help of a shovel and a magnifying glass
Simulation of a rescue starring students, where they will learn to use the avalanche victim detector (DVA), the shovel and the probe.

There is the possibility of doing 100% of the training within the class. In this case, more materials will have to be developed to work the orientation and the snow cover without going outside or limiting yourself to the school yard.

The rescue drill can be done by burying the victims with sheets.
