Mount Ararat is an old volcano covered with snow that with its 5,137 meters represents the maximum height of Turkey. Located in the region of Anatolia, near the border with Iran and Armenia, its ascent does not present great technical demands, but requires a good physical condition, so it is very suitable to begin in high altitude ascents.
For the Christian religion, Mount Ararat is the place where the “Noah’s ark” was deposited, after the Universal Flood. In some of its slopes have been supposed remains of the Ark. At its base, some Kurdish people allow to see the traditional nomadic life of this culture.
The Ararat volcano is located in the extreme east of Turkey, 16 km west of the Iranian border and 32 km south of the Armenian border. This mountain is considered one of the most unique on the earth for its broad base and the predominance of its silhouette in the landscape.
A smaller cone (3,896 m), Mount Sis, rises to the southeast of the main peak. A lava plateau extends between the two pinnacles.
Technically, the Ararat is a stratovolcano, formed from lava flows and ejections of pyroclastic materials.
The last recorded volcanic activity in the mountain was a major earthquake in July 1840 around the Defile of Now, along 1,825 m from the top of the mountain.
The first person to ascend was the German Friedrich von Parrot on September 27, 1829 and the first person to make a winter climb to the top was Bozkurt Ergör, the then president of the Turkish Mountaineering Federation on February 21, 1970.
The program that is included here is the ascent to the mountain. This program can be extended with some more day to visit areas near the mountain or the city of Istanbul, on demand.
